Although many dentists offer same-day appointments to handle urgent issues, if you develop a problem overnight or during the weekend outside of their business hours, you might have to wait a day or two before you can contact them for an appointment.

But there’s no reason to hurt while you wait. Thankfully, there are several at-home remedies you can try to alleviate your aches or inflammation. Continue reading to learn about 3 potential ways to help minimize your toothache!

Solution #1: Apply an Ice Pack

One simple but effective way to help alleviate the throbbing is by holding an ice pack or cold compress to the sore side of your face for about 15-minutes at a time. This induces a temporary numbing sensation that can provide some much-needed relief.

If that doesn’t help, you could even try sipping ice water and holding it in your mouth for several seconds at a time, though this might also trigger additional sensitivity, depending on the underlying cause of your toothache.

Please remember not to bite down or chew on the ice, as this can potentially chip, crack, or otherwise damage your enamel.

Solution #2: Rinse with Salt Water

Many persistent toothaches are the result of an infection in the tender pulp inside your tooth. One way to help remove excess fluids while simultaneously disinfecting your mouth of harmful bacteria, leftover food, and other debris that might cause complications, is by rinsing with a mixture of salt water.

You can create your own solution by mixing about ½ teaspoon of salt into an 8 oz glass of warm water and stirring until it’s completely dissolved. Then, sip it and swish it gently around your teeth and gums, spit it out in the sink, and then continue that pattern until the glass is empty. It’s usually safe to repeat this 2-3 times daily if needed.

Solution #3: Try Placing Tea Bags

Did you know that placing a tea bag against your sore tooth might also help alleviate the ache? For instance, peppermint tea contains menthol, which is known for its natural analgesic properties to help ease pain. It also has antibacterial properties to help fight infection.

You can soak a bag in hot water and place it to your tooth while it’s warm, or you might even place it in the freezer for several minutes, first, to apply a cold tea bag for additional numbing relief.

Trying one or more of these at-home remedies for toothaches can provide some much-needed relief until you can reach out to your dentist’s office to schedule an emergency visit!

About the Practice

Patients at Advanced Dental Concepts benefit from two providers who are passionate about helping them build and maintain beautiful, healthy smiles.
