What Is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a customized “cap” that is placed over the chewing surface of the teeth that need additional support. Crowns are personalized to cover the remaining structure of the teeth, helping to preserve them while replacing their natural shape and strength. There are several reasons why someone may need a dental crown. Here are some common causes.
- Severe tooth decay that cannot be treated by a filling alone.
- Physical injury to a tooth.
- Weakened tooth structure that needs support.
- Significant cosmetic imperfections.
- Restoring a lost tooth that is being replaced with a dental implant.
- Protecting a tooth that has been treated with root canal treatment.
The Dental Crown Process?

Dental crowns are placed over two separate appointments. During the first visits, we will start by numbing the area with a local anesthetic. Then, we will remove damaged or decayed portions of the tooth structure. We will also remove a small amount of enamel from the circumference of the tooth to allow for the crown to fit perfectly. After the tooth has to be prepared, impressions are taken and sent to the dental lab where your new crown will be made. A temporary crown is placed to keep your tooth safe until your final restoration has been completed.

Dental crowns offer a wide array of benefits. Here are some of the most notable ones.

Understanding the Cost of Dental Crowns

A tight budget shouldn’t stand between you and a beautiful smile. Although there is no flat fee for dental crowns because they are highly customizable, the team at Advanced Dental Concepts is committed to making the cost of your restorations as affordable as possible. For that reason, you’ll never need to worry about cutting corners on quality to remain within your budget, and you can always expect a durable, lifelike dental crown no matter what your payment method is.
Factors that Affect the Cost of Dental Crowns

There are several important factors that can affect the cost of your dental crown. These include:
- The severity of the damage to your tooth, and whether you’ll need any other procedures first, such as a root canal.
- The type of material used to make your dental crown (amalgam versus gold or porcelain).
It is also important to remember that the cheapest dental crown isn’t ideal. When it comes to something that will be cemented into your mouth, quality matters. You want your new crown to not only look good but also feel good for years to come!
Does Dental Insurance Cover Dental Crowns?

Yes, dental insurance typically covers about 50% of the cost of dental crowns and considers them a major procedure when they are medically necessary; however, this will vary depending on your individual plan. Our friendly insurance team will be happy to confirm your specific benefits with your dental insurance provider before beginning any work on your smile.
Other Options for Making Dental Crowns Affordable

In addition to welcoming your dental insurance, Advanced Dental Concepts is proud to offer several other valuable options for making your dental crowns more affordable. These include:
- Advanced Dental Wellness Plan – In addition to covering a variety of preventive treatments at 100%, our in-house membership plan offers a 15% discount on restorative treatments like dental crowns.
- CareCredit – We happily accept flexible financing from CareCredit, a third-party financier that can help make your dental crown treatment more affordable by breaking up the total cost into flexible, low-to-no-interest monthly payments that may be better suited to your budget.
The team at Advanced Dental Concepts wants to help make the cost of your dental crowns more manageable. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us today to schedule a consultation. We will happily go over your treatment plan and discuss your financial options in greater detail at that time.
Dental Crowns FAQs
Are Dental Crowns Permanent?
While certainly long-lasting, dental crowns in Dyer aren’t permanent. Even the best-maintained ones only work for 15 years before they need replacement, so their lifespans are limited. You can only take steps to ensure your crown lasts as long as possible, including regular oral care, dental checkups, etc.
All that said, the effects of the dental crown *process* are irreversible. Dentists remove bits of enamel to prepare your teeth for treatment, and this removed material doesn’t grow back. That means the “prepped” tooth will always need a crown (or a similar restoration) in the future. (Otherwise, the treatment site will face an increased risk of sensitivity and decay.)
Are Dental Crowns Safe?
Assuming they’re placed by a qualified dentist, dental crowns are perfectly safe and harmless. They won’t do any damage to your teeth, gums, or the rest of your smile.
For starters, modern dental crowns don’t contain toxic metals like mercury. Most are instead made of harmless and non-toxic ceramic, porcelain, zirconia, and so on. Your final restoration should thus prove safe for your grin and won’t cause any nasty side effects.
The placement of dental crowns is also a safe process. While it does remove some enamel, the placed crown(s) will compensate for this lost material. Your treatment won’t put your oral health at risk.
What Can I Eat with a Temporary Crown?
While using a temporary dental crown, you don’t need to alter your diet too much. You’ll just want to avoid certain select items until your permanent restoration is placed.
For example, you should limit your intake of sugary foods and beverages. Having too many of either would let sugar wedge between your temporary crown and gumline. Should that happen, your tooth could suffer decay and ruin the placement of your final cap.
You’d also do well to avoid very hot or cold dishes. Such meals could harm your temporary crown’s dental cement, causing the prosthetic to fall out. They could also cause unwanted (and unpleasant) tooth sensitivity.
Are Dental Crowns Tax-Deductible?
Dental crowns are sometimes tax-deductible. That said, whether your own are (or will be) depends on your situation.
The issue is largely based on why you need a dental crown. If the restoration is medically necessary, you might be able to deduct it from your taxes. You’ll just need to itemize the expense rather than take a standard deduction. Plus, all medical expenses fall under the 7.5% rule; you can only deduct such expenses if they exceed 7.5% of your adjusted gross income. (You can’t deduct costs that were reimbursed or even partially covered by dental insurance.)
